There are certain degrees which are not easy to come by but when you do get them the degree of satisfaction is immense. One such field is that of psychology. It can be very safely said that getting a degree in psychology does require years of schooling and thereby is not an easy feat. Understanding psychology on a basic level, is something anyone can do. As a matter of fact, you probably already have some basic skills in the field of psychology, which you practice every day but do not give too much attention to. For example, you’re going to a job interview. You certainly understand that it’s in your best interest to show up presentably attired, to conduct yourself in a professional and even tempered manner. You know that getting angry will not get you hired. Having a grasp of these few, basic concepts is indicative of understanding psychology on a basic level. However, you can improve your understanding exponentially when you make a simple analysis of your interactions with people.

Understanding psychology, at the lay person’s level, requires a little investigation and thought regarding your relations with others. What works and what doesn’t? First, you need to become a careful observer, if you aren’t already. Being a careful observer can be a lot of fun. Besides, you’ll learn a lot through simple observation, which can benefit you in many areas of your everyday life.

Here’s just one example. You’re sitting on a park bench, reading a book. A couple on the bench opposite you are having a spat. Observe their facial expressions. Is one angry while the other looks like they are about to burst into tears? Are they both angry? Are insults being hurled back and forth? Check the body language. Is one leaning towards the other, seeming to plead, while the other sits stiff-necked with arms crossed over their chest? The conversation is obviously not working out. Think about how each might change their behavior, tone of voice or body language to effect a more positive outcome. While you may not even be able to hear the conversation, you can mentally explore the positive and negative behaviors and so enhance your skills in understanding psychology and the nature of human behavior.

Any psychologist will agree that understanding what motivates people is essential in understanding psychology. While you aren’t qualified to be a professional counselor, if you understand what motivates your co-worker to behave angrily, you can avoid conflict. This can help resolve so many issues even before they grow out into bigger issues. Is this person just the aggressive type? Do you notice that he or she tends to speak without thinking? Are you the one who begins a conversation in an angry or superior tone? Remember the old adage, ‘you’ll catch more flies with honey than vinegar’. Understanding motivation, as well as understanding how your behavior affects others, is key to better relations with everyone.

Another important component in understanding psychology at the layman’s level is to have a basic understanding of personality types. The outgoing person does not require careful treatment, as would a very shy person lacking in confidence. Aggressive personality types may be looking for conflict. You may need to realize that people who are very spontaneous may speak before thinking and may blurt out something which hurts your feelings without any intent of doing so. Here’s another example to consider. The so called ‘tough love’ approach, doesn’t work on everyone, simply because people are different.

Understanding psychology at a basic level can help you in so many ways. Just remember that psychology is a field where one size does not fit all.Every individual is dofferent and so is his psychological level and understanding.
