Psychology Careers – A Very Wide Door
Whatever your motivation for being drawn to the world of psychology, there is surely a career that is perfect for you. Psychology careers vary greatly even in your elected discipline so the first, and possibly most important, step is to determine your ideal job and work backwards or what field interests you the most and work forward.
If you have specific psychology careers in mind, for instance you’d like to be an expert witness for the court system, that’s excellent. The first step is to start researching what the job entails and the educational requirements of that position. Identify Psychology jobs suiting your needs. It will help to identify your collegiate needs. In our example, a degree in forensic psychology and criminal justice are required. Now you need to determine what level of education must be attained before you’ll be properly equipped for the position. This usually requires identifying whether a master’s degree or doctorate’s degree is needed.

If you aren’t quite sure what psychology careers interest you the most, that’s completely fine, too! Almost all will require a level of higher education so the best place to start on this search is by examining all of the different options available to you. The most popular are clinical and counseling psychology. Forensic psychology is starting to become an incredibly hot career path as well. Consider stopping by your admissions office at your college or university and speaking to a career counselor who may be able to help you better determine what fits best. The fact that you can at least identify that you’d love to have a career in the psychological world is a great first step. Once you’ve done a little research and narrowed down all of the psychological disciplines into a couple of interests, dig deeper. Again, since almost all psychology careers require a level of higher education, consider both career latitudes. You will be presented with the option of two degrees, either a master’s or a doctorate’s and each of these opens different doors. Not only do they present unique opportunities, they will require different levels of commitment, education, expense, and knowledge. Choosing between the two degree programs can be quite a difficult task so take your time and don’t choose lightly. Be sure that when you’ve earned your final diploma, whether it’s a master’s degree or doctorate’s, it’s the end result you wanted. This will lead you on the career path you had originally sought out.
