Professional School of Psychology – The Differences

With so many different names for higher education, it can sometimes be hard to decipher what each one is. If you are applying to a professional school of psychology, what does that mean? There are schools, colleges, and universities. Think of all of these as a pyramid with the base being the broadest and the top being the most specific. At the top would sit a school, something specifically focused on one topic of education. In this case, it would be psychology. Moving down the pyramid, the school fits into a broader college, usually a college of the arts. From there, a university offers many colleges, possibly an engineering college, business college, and arts college.

So now that you know that you will ultimately want to be applying to a professional school of psychology, how do you narrow it down? One major deciding factor is cost and affordability. There are many different avenues to explore when trying to pursue a quality graduate program and making it affordable as possible. Outside of the cost factor, the other major contributor is lifestyle. If you have prior obligations like a family, own a home, or have pets, these must all be taken into consideration when choosing a school that best meets your needs as well.

School Psychology- The Online Way

The most affordable way to get your education is usually an online school or community college or a combination thereof. First, you need to determine what level of education you hope to obtain. If you are after a master’s degree, an online professional school of psychology can usually provide you the ability to obtain it fully from them . This without ever having to step foot inside a classroom. If you are after a PhD, you will most likely have to go to a traditional brick and mortar college at some point due to the more intensive research and clinical requirements.

If you are after a PhD, this does not rule out an online curriculum, though. First, determine what brick and mortar school you’d like to ultimately graduate from. Some offer online courses so it may be as simple as taking some of your workload online and some in the classroom. If that’s not the case, identify an online professional school of psychology that can transfer your credits to your brick and mortar school. This will ensure that your time and money hasn’t been wasted when it’s time to take the jump from one school to another.
