Masters Psychology – Education One Step Further
If you’ve already attained a bachelor’s degree in a psychology program, maybe you should consider taking your education one step further. Masters psychology is the next step along the way and will help prepare you for a career in the many fields of psychology available today. Whatever your motivation is behind obtaining a psychology degree, a master’s degree will help increase your knowledge in a specific discipline.
Although a masters psychology degree will better prepare you for a career in the world of psychology, it usually will not prepare you for license as a psychologist or psychiatrist. If that is your ultimate goal, though, a master’s degree is still required before you can move on to the next step, a doctorate program. One of the main positions a masters psychology degree will open up for you, though, is working as a counselor or psychologist in a school setting. If this describes you, here are three main careers that would require a master’s degree.
Careers After Master’s in Psychology
First, there is educational psychology. Their goal is to achieve a better understanding of the learning process and develop new methods of teaching so material is better understood. These types are usually employed by colleges and universities. Next, there is a school counselor. People in these careers usually work at elementary, middle, or high schools and help troubled youth deal with issues from problems at home to troubles with peers. They can also help with learning issues and help children function more effectively under environmental stressors. These could include peer pressure and bullying. Finally, there is school psychology. The function of someone with this career varies by their school of employment but they, too, usually work at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. The most common function of a school psychologist is to perform testing. They also work with teachers to develop interventions for students. One key thing to keep in mind with these careers, though, is that they require a degree in education to work at a school. These aren’t the only careers that a masters psychology degree will lead you to, either. These are just the most popular.
A masters psychology degree is a very broad term. As with most collegiate masters programs, the purpose is to create a more specific discipline of education in a field that interests you. It’s also the middle requirement between a bachelor’s degree and a PhD. If you are interested in any career in the psychology world, though, this is a major step in the right direction.
